The Sentinel project will see humans live underwater by 2027
An ocean tech and exploration firm called Deep is working on an underwater habitat designed to allow humans to live on the cusp of the twilight zone for up to a month.
Given that we know more about space than we do about our planet’s oceans, the team at Deep — an ocean technology and exploration firm — is confident that we have an entirely new world to gain by spending more time beneath the depths.
Historically, our human incognizance about the ocean has not been caused by a lack of curiosity. Rather, our capacity (or lack thereof) for being able to stay in the ocean to conduct in-depth research over time has left us completely unaware of what’s down there.
Sean Wolpert, the president of Deep, is confident that the ocean holds a wealth of incredible discoveries waiting to be uncovered, such as the cure for cancer or novel ways to enhance our own biological resilience.
From the possibility of developing new pharmaceuticals to better understanding the behaviours of elusive marine animals, the primary motivation behind his company’s underwater hub — aptly named ‘Sentinel’ — is to enrich our knowledge of and relationship with the ocean.
